HOLLY HILL — Mykal Tairu, owner of Midtown Laundry and an advocate in the fight against employment discrimination, opened his business to lead by example.
Tairu, 30, said his work in the community, especially advocating for convicted felons to become gainfully employed, inspired his entrepreneurship.
“I spent a lot of time organizing,” said Tairu, referring to his community activism. “I was a community organizer right out of college. I was dedicated to organizing around criminal justice reform issues. One of the things that we focused a lot of energy on was how do we get formerly incarcerated individuals into the workforce.”
Tairu found a campaign that fit with his goals.
“We jumped on this campaign called Ban the Box,” said Tairu. “We essentially asked employers and local government officials to delay the box on employment applications that asks if an applicant has been convicted of a felony. That way, an individual could at least get a face-to-face interview before being judged on the checked box.”
