DANBURY — A tour of Danbury’s Federal Correctional Institute Wednesday following what some elected federal officials called “highly concerning” reports on COVID and staffing conditions left two U.S. senators with more questions than answers.
U.S. Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy, D- Conn., state Sen. Julie Kushner, D-Danbury, and state Rep. Pat Callahan, R-New Fairfield, met with American Federation of Government Employees Local 1661 union members to walk through the facility.
They intended to review the facility’s COVID, staffing, and building conditions. But the initial visit itinerary, crafted by the union at least two weeks ago, was interrupted by Bureau of Prison administrators who barred legislators’ access to certain areas and to the incarcerated people at the facility.
