When Pamela Winn was convicted of fraud and sentenced to 78-months in jail in 2003, she was six months pregnant. On her way to prison, she tripped over the chains that restrained her and fell. Later that day, she suffered a miscarriage and was moved to solitary confinement, she was told, for her health and safety.

Since then, she’s made it her mission to ensure women who are pregnant while incarcerated receive the care they require, founding advocacy group RestoreHER in 2018. She’s advocated for policies such as the Georgia’s Women’s Care Act, which grants women the right to postpone their sentences until six weeks postpartum, and the Dignity for Incarcerated Women Act, which seeks to ensure pregnant women receive proper care while imprisoned.

But getting there wasn’t easy. Following her release, Winn said she struggled to shake the stigma associated with having served time and the shame of leaving her family and losing her business to do so.

“I had to constantly remind myself who I was,” said Winn at the inaugural Forbes 30/50 Summit in Abu Dhabi on March 7. “When I first came home, I would do everything to avoid the fact that I had been incarcerated and went away.” Continue reading >>>
