At least 5.2 million children under the age of 18 have an incarcerated parent

The Coalition for Public Safety writes:

“We have no idea the extent of the devastation caused by maternal incarceration. I feel we are only touching the surface of the number of children who have been impacted.” Nearly half of US states do not collect data on the number of incarcerated women with children, according to a new report released on Wednesday by the organization, Girls Embracing Mothers. This makes it difficult for some nonprofits to provide services to those youth, the report says. The study, conducted between July and October 2022 found that 24 states do not collect any data on incarcerated mothers, and that only 11 states do. Nine states do have some data but reported that it’s unreliable or unhelpful, among other things. Six states did not respond to the study. “Nearly 50% of all incarcerated women are mothers,” Brittany Barnett, founder and president of Girls Embracing Mothers, said. “So I can only imagine the number of children out there that we have no idea the number, let alone who they are to be able to offer the support that they really need.”
