County Launches Supplemental Income Pilot Program for Individuals Reentering the Community

Supplemental Income Pilot Program differs from similar program already in place

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Across the country, there are communities that have implemented pilot programs guaranteeing an income for selected participants.

In North Carolina, Durham is in the process of evaluating its experiment that gave $500 a month to 115 recently released inmates. Now, Mecklenburg County has launched a similar program.

The program in Durham had no conditions for how the money could be used. Participants could spend it as they wished. In Mecklenburg County, the money can only be spent in five categories – childcare, health, drug abuse treatment, education and general welfare.

The county announced the Supplemental Income Pilot Program on Monday. Through it, 60 formerly incarcerated people will be chosen to receive $600 a month for one year.
