The day John Vaesau was finally released from prison, he was so happy to be free that he almost forgot about his “gate money,” the $200 entitled by California law to help formerly incarcerated people reenter society.
“It didn’t even dawn on me at first because I was just so happy to be out,” Vaesau said.
However, as he transitioned back to life in San Francisco after 33 years behind bars, the money never arrived.
“I was thinking, ‘It’s going to come. I’ll probably get it in a couple of weeks,’” Vaesau said. “And then weeks turned into months, and months turned into a year.” Continue reading >>>
